Result 2.6: Policies and strategies for control and eradication of animal diseases based on surveillance and other epidemiological data in line with international standards (control and eradication plans, contingency plans) are developed and/or reviewed and updated.
Indicative activities:
2.6.1 Review of the existing plans and the preparation of new plans for disease control and eradication (Zoonosis and other animal diseases) in line with international standards and taking into account different husbandry practices (intensive and nomadic). Review shall include, but not be limited to: Avian Influenza, Pest of small rodents, Foot and Mouth Disease, and blue tongue;
This activity mainly provided by STEs missions to elaborate a global strategy permitting the ARD to better control zoonosis and animal diseases using a consistent and coordinated approach with the Ministry of Health. The guidelines for the implementation of a control and eradication plan against Peste des Petits Ruminants in Lebanon have been prepared, in agreement with the international standards of OIE and FAO. The draft plan was developed as a set of 11 thematic cards reporting on: 1) Etiology; 2) Resistance to Physical and Chemical Action; 3) The Disease; 4) Clinical, Anatomopathological and Epidemiological Criteria Allowing Suspect Case Definition; 5) Investigation of Suspect Case; 6) Sample Collection; 7) Differential Diagnosis; 8) Laboratory Diagnosis; 9) Epidemiological Surveillance; 10) Management of a Suspected and Confirmed PPR Outbreak; 11) Vaccination. Furthermore annexes have been produced to support data collection, registration and analysis

Mission 01 - 25 June 2019 – 27 June 2019

The mission was mainly dedicated to meet several rabies experts from different institutions (MoA, MoH, a representative of a veterinary service, LARI, Animals Lebanon and Lebanese Veterinary Order) to obtain an overview of rabies epidemiology in Lebanon, both in animals and in humans. This information will be used to elaborate the control and prevention plan.

This mission aimed to meet experts and stakeholders from different institutions (MoA, OIE (representative), LARI and AUB Medical Center). The main point for discussions focused on the strategy to adopt to improve rabies control and surveillance in Lebanon.
2.6.3 Provide training to ARD inspectors and other relevant staff on sampling collection and handling of biological material.
